Als Professor Parker (Richard Gere) eines Tages nach der Arbeit einen herrenlosen Hundewelpen am Bahnhof findet, ahnt er noch nicht, dass dies der Beginn einer ganz besonderen Freundschaft ist. Während seine Frau (Joan Allen) den kleinen japanischen Akita-Hund sehr zögerlich aufnimmt, wird Parkers Herz von Hachiko im Sturm erobert.
