In einer Bucht in der Normandie wird eine grausam zugerichtete Leiche entdeckt. Gleichzeitig wird der abgehalfterte Kommissar Jacques Renard (Christopher Lambert) von der schönen Schauspielerin Victoria (Sophie Marceau) gebeten, sich eines angeblichen Kriminalfalls in Zimmer 401 des Hotels "Normandy" anzunehmen. Der Oberleutnant der Polizei macht sich auf den Weg nach Deauville und steht jeder Menge Fragen gegenüber: Was ist in Zimmer 401 geschehen? Wo ist der Direktor des Hotels? Aber am wichtigsten: Wie kann eine Schauspielerin, die vor 30 Jahren ums Leben kam, ihn mit einem Fall betrauen?
